Importance of a preventive maintenance in a service industry

The service industry needs preventive maintenance to reduce the human errors that may result from the activities of its employees and equipment when delivering services to customers. In most instances, the employees of a service industry are the ones who take care of, and service tools and equipment that have been purchased by customers to the business, in some instances they may be working with customers who bought items elsewhere but want the business to help with servicing them.

A service industry should ensure it has a perfect mechanism in place for ensuring the employees carry out systematic inspection of equipment and tools, and are able to detect and correct any potential failures of systems, or equipment and tools. There are several services that are involved in the maintenance of systems, tools, equipment, and machinery. These include replacement, adjustments, replacement of nonfunctional parts, and measurements. If all these are done by qualified teams there are very few chances that the customers will be caught unawares in the course of business.

The major goal for preventive maintenance practices is to mitigate the consequences of equipment or systems failing. Usually, failure results in loss of economic opportunities, and loss of revenues for businesses, and avoiding it is one way of increasing the sustainability of a business. Many businesses make attempts to prevent the occurrence of a failure before it really occurs, and this can only be done through routine maintenance practices by qualified personnel. A good maintenance practice is one that enables a business to replace any worn out component before it fails. Note that the preventive maintenance for a service industy may slightly differ from that of goods, in that mostly the service industry involves employee skills more that the goods industry does. The management any business should always asses the need of their customers and acquire all the resources necessary for sustainability in the service industry.

One of the greatest challenges for service industry is the ease with which customers switch to product of competitors, and this calls for an excellent management that will ensure the customers get satisfaction from all angles. A business in the service industry should always be aware of new market and production trends, as these are essential for its survival. It should always ensure its personnel are fully equipped with up to date skills that enable them provide excellent services for their customers. If they do this there are few chances that they will be caught unawares.
